TAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot), meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek, is the tribalistic trio consisting of members Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun, and Souleymane Ibrahim, who are also the rhythm section of the acclaimed Agadez, Niger-based desert quartet Mdou Moctar. As two of the most spiritually sophisticated melody machines coming from the ancient atmosphere of the Saharan music scene, TAKAAT brings an intimate intensity and ritualistic rhythm to a whole other level with their three-volume series “Is Noise, Vol. 1-3.” And we all know that all good things come in threes (omne trium perfectum), and TAKAAT understands this to the utmost degree by demonstrating delightful dynamics within their unique universe. Having released the series over the last year or so, the group has truly tapped into the cosmic consciousness through the revolutionary results of ancestral anarchy and cultural compositions within the feverish fibers of the band’s biochemistry. As if someone carefully tapped on the esoteric entrance of a tomb riddled with rare rooms leading to tonal treasure, Vol. 3 continues the cosmic climate of the group’s meditative message by sonically showcasing their worldly brilliance and poetic place on this sometimes eerie earth. Recorded at Purplish/Bossa Studios and released on Purplish Records back in March, both operations are guided by Mikey Coltun, who backs the band by way of bass, electronics, drone synths, and drum machines. The group ultimately continues its voluminous vision of captivating control over its audience by eagerly enlightening listeners into a transcendental trance that can only be broken once the sun rises.

TAKAAT was born from the idea of always evolving concepts and taking risks, seeing each volume as an opportunity to explore noisy futures steeped in a shared language of DIY. Through chronologically limited 10” EPs, you too can take the noise home. Play it loud.

While bridging the gaps between creative chaos and the harsh harmonies of drone feedback, TAKAAT have effortlessly established an electrifying ecosystem where sky meets sand in this cosmic collection of epic entries from the beloved students of the sonic sphere. It must be acknowledged that while the group is touring the East Coast in support of their most recent effort, a devastating reality is beginning to set in for those trying to enter the US to spread their art for the betterment of humanity. “As many of you know, due to the recent US travel ban for all Nigerian citizens, this might be the last time we’re able to tour in the US for a while. Touring is a big part of our lives and our main source of income, so this is a big loss for us,” says the group about the latest development, but there’s always hope, and a reason to remain optimistic even in the darkest of times. TAKAAT may translate to “noise.” Still, they are far from just being a crowded creature of chaos, providing the lush landscapes for an unforgettable night of creative carnage. Their institution for tonal thought and gravitational greatness stands the test of time, even if time isn’t always on our side.
