Dagmar Zuniga :: In Filth Your Mystery is Kingdom / Far Smile Peasant in Yellow Music
There’s an exciting element when you discover something sacred and special on the internet, while simultaneously coexisting in a tech-savvy world, where “everything” is at the tip of your fingertips, while also being monitored in this gatekeeping echo chamber, all under the intense insanity of a blood moon that hangs high in the midnight sky. There aren’t many advantages to being the “Lewis and Clark” of underground music anymore. There was a time in the early to mid-2000s when the melodic mystique of rare releases bounced off the soft skulls, into the ears, and into the pockets of avid collectors, overly obsessed bloggers, and uploading maniacs of the early days of YouTube. The chance to share the culture, and the eager establishment of the market to justify its value, quickly became the game. Still, some music can only be measured by its intimate impact and critical connection. Something priceless in the grand scheme of it all. While some things remain the same, it’s always a tonal treat to find something lurking under a rustic rock somewhere up the East Coast just waiting to be discovered by a "water cutter" or a person who skips rocks across various ponds and bodies of isolated water. New York-based singer-songwriter Dagmar Zuniga grew up in Miami with her brother and Nicaraguan mother, and began writing and performing music in an all-girl band at just the age of eight.
Carefully collecting and harmoniously harvesting over a dozen creative creatures to make up her exciting ecosystem of tiny breathing things, the album explores several eager elements of existential exploration into the human psyche through the meditative medium of songwriting. Zuniga’s ability to conquer the atmospheric anatomy of her craft is compelling and instantly makes her debut a classic right out of the gate. Intimately inspired and mercilessly motivated to connect with the spiritual soundscapes of her creative pursuits, Zuniga silently released an incredible body of work on Bandcamp and YouTube in January of 2025 through a friend’s label, People's Coalition of Tandy, shortly after being discovered by cult legend and generational genius Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie), who eventually invited her to tour with them for a summer. The young songwriter quickly captivated audiences with her spiritual soothsaying, which willingly washes over the eyes and ears of listeners, both new and old. Having taken music fans of all stripes by storm, the album is getting a proper release this spring on vinyl, CD, and cassette through the London-based label AD93 Recordings in early April.
